These colors are derived from carotenoid pigments, which birds and all other vertebrates acquire from their diet. Females prefer to mate with males that exhibit the brightest colors and thus may acquire the most skilled foragers in doing so.Birding is Fun!https://www.blogger.com/profile/11836693921863185316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5068198388134099737.post-30784009622957981292010-11-01T17:31:30.005-06:002010-11-01T17:31:30.005-06:00Thanks for the nice comments. But the explanation for the winter molt seems a little incomplete. Many other birds maintain bright colors in the winter and do not suffer abundant predation. Do you have a clue as to some other reasons the male might be olive colored in the winter?

Thanks.Billhttp://www.wildramblings.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5068198388134099737.post-11424256086153886582010-11-01T16:39:58.982-06:002010-11-01T16:39:58.982-06:00Nice photos...Nice photos...Philwebserviceshttp://philwebservices.i.ph/blogs/philwebservices/2010/06/03/philwebservices-guide-to-choosing-high-volume-philippine-web-hosting-provider/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5068198388134099737.post-40788255515237564122010-11-01T13:29:39.764-06:002010-11-01T13:29:39.764-06:00Great action shots of the Goldfinch Bob.Great action shots of the Goldfinch Bob.Phil Sladehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01846400106748443969noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5068198388134099737.post-88004479837731700782010-11-01T11:12:35.357-06:002010-11-01T11:12:35.357-06:00Great collection and beautiful photos.Great collection and beautiful photos.gwenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13834955958786552475noreply@blogger.com
