My Favorite Little Sparrow Spot

Canal St.
Grasshopper Sparrow
As October comes to a close I look forward to the arrival of sparrows.  There's a little spot I've come to love visiting. It's just a rural road with a few areas of good sparrow habitat. On one part of the road is a little fence line with dense vegetation, and sparrows seem to be pretty active there for the 45 minutes or so after sunrise. This fence line is on the west side of the road, so in the morning, the sun casts a nice warm light onto the area, and the clearing behind the fence allows for some nice clean backgrounds.

A little bit farther south on the same road there's another little spot that's pretty good for sparrows as well. We get a lot of Swamp Sparrows here, and even a Lincoln Sparrow was seen here.

Of course, other birds hang out here this time of year as well.  This is one of the places I go to look for opportunities for "portrait" photos of common species.

  1. It certainly seems like a good "hot" spot, and the light is just beautiful on the birds. I think I like the Northern Mockingbird bird the best with it's lovely setting.

    1. Thanks! I almost didn't include the mockingbird because they're so common here. Glad I changed my mind.

  4. Great post with excellent photos! I used to not care for sparrows but have come to really appreciate how diverse they really are. My favorite yard sparrows this fall have included Fox, Harris's, White-throated, White-crowned, Lincoln's, and American Tree. Fun birds!

    1. I think I know what you mean. It took me a while to develop a love for sparrows, but I like the challenge. I used to think of them as being drab, but then I set my eyes on a Le Conte's Sparrow, and all that changed.

  6. Looks like you found a great area for spotting sparrows and other birds. The lighting is especially beautiful. So many pretty sparrows! I especially love the Lincoln's Sparrow image. All are quite lovely though!

  7. My husband thinks of sparrows as an invasive species. But I'm just glad there are birds around while we are eating outdoors at Chipotle. Who else would clean up all the extra rice!
