As the year winds down, I've compiled a
top ten list of my own best birds of 2014. I mostly stayed close to home this past year--and ended up in the top 3 listers for my home county for the third year in a row, adding 7 birds to my Hunterdon County (NJ) list. A also added 12 birds to my yard list. Close to home I
found a new bird for New Jersey. New birds were few and far between, I got 2 new ABA birds and 11 life birds--mostly on a trip to The Netherlands in October.

Whether you just birded in your yard, or you traveled around the globe, everyone has birding favorites from the past year. What were your own birding highlights and best birds of 2014?
That's nice to watch and photograph the new birds !

Both from south Texas in 2014.
I can't isolate best birds, but hummingbirds for the first time in the wild in Costa Rica, a safari in Kenya with my first birding in Africa and seeing an Emperor Penguin in the Weddell Sea have made this a wonderful year overseas, whilst at home in Australia, seeing my first Crimson Chats was very special.
