About Robert

Robert Mortensen began birding in the summer of 2004 when his father-in-law Lynn Davenport handed him a pair of binoculars to go on a Sunday afternoon walk at Lake Lowell (Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge) in Nampa, Idaho. Birding was an instant addiction.

Married to Jessica since 1999, they have four children that keep them hoppin'. Robert served a LDS Mission in Rosario, Argentina from 1996-1998 and still speaks Spanish fairly fluently. Unfortunately he was not yet a birder and missed all those great South American species.

Robert grew up in Nampa, Idaho and graduated from Nampa High School in 1995. He received a bachelor's degree in Construction Management in 2002 from Brigham Young University with a minor in Management from the Marriott School of Business. Being in the construction industry, Robert and his family have been on the move every few years following the work. They've had wonderful adventures in South Carolina, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. Now as co-owner of the family home-building and remodeling business, the Mortensen's hope to put down their own roots in the Boise area.

A "well-rounded nerd", Robert's other interests include adventures with his family, serving in his church and the Boy Scouts of America, enjoying college football (BYU & BSU), history, politics, reading, family history/genealogy, and music. Robert plays clarinet and tenor sax and enjoys singing too.

In late 2011, Robert was appointed the American Birding Association Bird of the Year Coordinator. He also assisted the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival committee in 2012.
