Smorgasbord at the Wren House

Three weeks ago, while observing the entertaining aerial displays of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, I noticed two very busy House Wrens bringing a plethora of insects back to one of our nestboxes. I was quite amazed by the variety of bugs the wren parents brought to the hungry nestlings and thought it would be fun to take a few photographs. What a marvelous buffet these young wrens were served!

Please click on the images for a closer look.

Spiders were quite plentiful, as I observed the adult House Wrens feed lots of the leggy creatures to the young birds

A real treat, two insects at once!

Daddy long-legs spiders were often brought to the nest

The wren parents foraged for insects and fed their nestlings all day long

Waste management

Disposing of the fecal sac is one of the House Wrens many duties. A fecal sac is a mucous membrane that surrounds the feces of some nesting birds. Having it contained allows for easier waste removal from the nest.

Crickets were the most common insects brought to the nest

Crunchy bugs were part of the menu

I marveled at the variety of insects brought to the loquacious young wrens

Little wrens are hungry and QUITE demanding

  1. That's a really interesting post. The variety is huge! I often wonder how birds can catch a second snack whilst already holding another in their bill.
Good images too. I especially like the last one with that hungry gape!
