Warblers, Vireos, Cuckoos & More


This post features several of the beautiful birds I have seen over the past two months. The photographs below were taken in La Porte, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois.


Sitting pretty ~ Magnolia Warbler


A stunning Chestnut-sided Warbler hunts for food


Perched amid the seed pods ~ Black-billed Cuckoo


Foraging amongst the berries ~ Black-throated Blue Warbler


A feisty Carolina Wren fluffs its feathers


Delighting in dogwood berries ~ Warbling Vireo


Seeking sustenance ~ Northern Parula


A Yellow-billed Cuckoo sits quietly in the wooded grove


Hunting for insects ~ Blue-winged Warbler


A resplendent Yellow-throated Vireo pauses briefly on a limb


A beautiful sight ~ American Redstart


Two Sandhill Cranes take off in unison


A Red-eyed Vireo seeks a meal on a cool autumn day


An Orange-crowned Warbler snacks on seeds


A tiny Golden-crowned Kinglet pulls spider silk off its wing feather


While diligently guarding a feeder, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird takes time to ruffle its feathers

  4. Julie, such wonderful pictures! I have never heard of a Mourning Vireo, though. Is that a new classification?

    1. Oh my goodness, Kathie. I must have had Mourning Warblers on my brain and typed in the incorrect name. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. The photograph is of a Warbling Vireo.

  5. Not only are these pictures stunning, but you have been seeing some really good birds lately! I particularly liked both the cuckoo pictures and the Black-throated Blue Warbler.
