The 10 Most Beautiful Birds

Painted Bunting

One of the top reasons people watch birds is because birds are so beautiful. In keeping with that theme, here are some of our top picks for the list of the 10 most beautiful birds found in the ABA (American Birding Association) Checklist Area. Painted Bunting makes the list because it's so colorful. We sometimes call it the Monet Bird, because it has all the colors of an artist's palette. It's my favorite bird and that's why it graces the cover of our national guide, The Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America (which is coming out as regional editions, The New Stokes Field Guide to Birds: Eastern and Western Region on March 26th). It's hard to narrow down the list to 10 birds, since there are sooo many beautiful birds.

The Roseate Spoonbill is outrageous cotton candy pink

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a show-stopper

The Yellow Warbler is melted butter beauty

The Summer Tanager is oh, so red

The Great Egret is pure elegance

The Baltimore Oriole is attention-grabbing black and orange

The Black Skimmer has classic, graphic colors

The Blackburnian Warbler is the flame of beauty

The graceful flyer,  Swallow-tailed Kite, gets our vote

So what would your top picks be for the list of the 10 most beautiful birds?

  8. Lilian, you picked the most perfect shots of each species! I love them them all, but the interaction of light and shadow in the Black Skimmer gets my vote.
