Waitin' for Chickadees

My kids have seen online video and photos of chickadees eating from the hand.  Darn it if our chickadees won't do that.  So, my girls decided to try and train them and of course full camouflage is the only way to go, right?!  This afternoon they actually sat there motionless and quiet as a mouse for a full 30 minutes - an amazing feat for a four and six year old!  Chickadees approached to within a foot or so, but never ventured onto their wanting hands.  Maybe next time girls!

  1. I used to try to catch hummingbirds with a net at our feeders when I was little. They came really close to me but I never caught one! Getting a chickadee to land on you, though, is a little more realistic!

  2. Adorable photos - and I've tried to get my chickadees to land on my hand, but not this year.... keep trying - the more you're out there staying still, the more the birds get used to you... Several days in succession for about 15 minutes each time, by the end of a week, I bet they land... good luck - great kids to want to do this John... love that they enjoy what you do too... b

  5. @Anna - since you're there in Boise, you need to meet and go birding with Mike Morrison. Have him tell you about catching hummingbirds bare-handed as a kid.

@Barbara - we'll have to try that method out! Thanks for the tips!

@Dawn - Oh, I am standing by with the camera for that very moment! It will be a great thrilling day for them!

@Rebecca - Thanks for you hope! It will happen!
